What to drink for the France-Belgium match ?
Do you love football but don’t know which wines to enjoy while watching French matches? Don’t worry! For the Euro Cup, Vintage has some great advice to guide you. An exercise in “foodie/footie pairings”.
Monday 1 July. Another get-together with the neighbours. After the 2018 World Cup semi-final and the 2021 League of Nations semi-final, France will square off with Belgium in the round of sixteen of the Euro Cup. The occasion is too good not to invite friends over and prepare a nice aperitif. All that’s left is to find the right bottle to enchant your guests. When it comes to pairing football and wine, you can’t be wrong with Château Gloria: Henri Martin, the creator of this great Saint-Julien wine, was the president of the Girondins de Bordeaux football club from 1961 to 1971! Amazingly, his son-in-law, Jean-Louis Triaud, who took over as head of the estate, was also in charge of the club with the “scapular” emblem (1996-2017). Under his leadership, Bordeaux won the French championship twice. In short, football is in Château Gloria’s blood. You’ve made the perfect choice to take on the Belgians.
In the post-match interview, Kevin de Bruyne says that once again France played “anti-football”. You revel in his sulking and tell yourself that to celebrate a French victory over the Belgians, you absolutely must open a bottle of Gloria 2018. That summer, Les Bleus beat Belgium 1-0 in the World Cup semi-final. The rest is history! As well as bringing back happy memories, this sunny, powerful 2018 vintage is a magnificent pairing to the tender entrecote steak grilling on the vine-shoot embers. As you sip your drink, this statistic comes to mind: the last two times France played Belgium in an official competition, they won the trophy. The evening is balmy, the wine delicious, and the first notes of Gloria Gaynor anthem echo in your head, heralding a brighter tomorrow. See you at the quarter-finals!
